Joseph Gavoille received the B.Sc. (1997) and M.Sc. (1998) degrees in mechanics and a Masters in material science (1999) from the University of Franche-Comté, a Masters in mechanical engineering (1999) at the Top School ENSMM “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques” in Besançon, and a Ph.D. in engineering science from the University of Franche-Comté (2002). From 2003 to 2005, he has worked as an engineer in surface science at the Laboratoire de Microanalyse des Surfaces in the framework of the European HARDECOAT project, for which he carried out experiments on the mechanical and morphological properties of oxynitride thin films. In 2006 he was nominated as Assistant Professor in materials science at the Top School ENSMM and as a researcher in the Tribology and surface coatings team of the Laboratoire de Microanalyses des Surfaces. Since 2008 he is part of the MIcro NAno MAterials & Surfaces team (MINAMAS) in the Micro Nano Sciences & Systems (MN2S) research department of the FEMTO-ST Institute. His works are focused on the mechanical and physico-chemical properties of surfaces (adhesion, surface functionalization, …). He has published his main results in , Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, Tribology International, Thin Solid Films, Surface and coatings technology.
