The Carnot initiative fits in with the pact of research whose main objective is to broaden the multidisciplinarity skills of the french public research, notably by promoting its projects with industrial partners.
These research structures called “Instituts Carnot” have to satisfy some criteria such as involvement towards partners, scientific excellence and a reliable internal organization in order to provide responses of quality to social economic demandes.
Each institute receives an additional amount granted by the National Research Agency (ANR) which depends on the turn-over importance for the research with partners. This amount allows them to finance the actions which maintain and achieve the institute objectives such as scientific and technological resources or professionalization and development of the research with partners.
The label renewal depends on the high standards of these objectives and also on the respect of Carnot charter.
Currently, 33 Carnot institutes (13 of them were awarded with the label in march 2007) are nation-wide listed and federated within an associative structure called “ Association des Instituts Carnot” (“AICarnot”)which insure concerted actions for its members.
Carnot institutes bring together 12 300 research permanent employees and 6 000 PhDs. Their consolidated budget reaches 1300 M€ for 420 M€ of partners incomings.
Their skills are centred on micro and nanotechnologies, information and telecommunication technologies, earth sciences, live sciences, energy, materials, mechanics, chemistry...
