Context

The global objective of the activities of our T2DC team is to predict the lifetime of organic matrix composites subjected to complex loading. The team’s originality and strength lies in the diversity and complementarity of its skills and of the tools developed at the scales under investigation (from the microscale to the total structure) to address these problems.

The T2DC team emphasizes the study of promising material composites having high industrial potential. These consist mainly of composites reinforced with carbon fibers and based on thermostable thermoplastic matrices, in addition to reinforcements from annual plants and biobased matrices. With a strong mechanical performance, and a low environmental impact due to their recyclable and/or renewable nature, these materials are of definite interest.


Goals and Research Areas

The T2DC team has two main objectives:

› Mechanical behavior and sustainability of biobased composites: activities are focused on the characterization and modeling of the thermo-hygro-mechanical behavior of plant fibers at elementary fiber level, and the characterization of transfer of behavior, of properties and of their dispersion from the elementary fiber towards continuous reinforcement and then towards the composite;

› Health monitoring and prediction of the remaining useful life of composites by acoustic emission: activities are focused on the development and evaluation of robust algorithms for evaluation of health status from massive data (multiple sensors, a high sampling rate, particularly in the presence of noise measurement and of uncertainty concerning the number and type of damages involved.


Expertise

The team’s activities rest upon three main pillars:
› Physical and numerical modeling;
› Experimental characterization including the development of original devices; and
› Health monitoring with non-destructive techniques.

These experiments on plant fibers are original mainly for their use of innovative and experimental tools and techniques developed along with theoretical approaches used to characterize and model complex behaviors displayed by these biobased
materials.

The team’s approach to health monitoring is original in that it combines skills within a broad thematic spectrum and can thus offer integrated approaches at odds with those developed in recent years in an expanding area of research.


Implementing our work

Activities undertaken within the scope of this theme have led to numerous collaborative projects within FEMTO-ST (the Optics Department) as well as nationally and internationally. The T2DC team is part of a consortium entitled BioComp that brings together a dozen academic partners whose objective is to foster the emergence of continuous hemp reinforcements and biobased resins for the fabrication of composites that will have only a moderate environmental impact. Investigations into health monitoring are included in the activities of LABEX ACTION (development of composite structures integrating acoustic micro-sensor networks of the MEMS type).
