Activities

Activities of the department

Activities are focused on piezoelectric resonators used in oscillators or sensors.

  • The main thematic activity is the generation of ultra-stable frequency sources based on volume-waves acoustic resonators. This work requires:

- the knowledge of the operation of piezoelectric resonators and especially their vibration modes modelling, the physical phenomenons influencing their frequency, and their fabrication processes,
- the elaboration of oscillation maintenance circuits for which competences in low-noise analogical electronics are needed.

These two competences are supplemented by measurements of the stability and intrinsic noise of sources and resonators and by the characterization of piezoelectric materials.

  • The first activity influences the second one which regards the conception and realization of monolithic sensors on anisotropic crystalline substrates. It especially deals with “frequency output” sensors using piezoelectric resonators as sensing elements.

This part also includes the analytical study and the numerical simulation of phenomenons arising in sensors and also the modelling of crystalline chemical anisotropic etching.

The LCEP department is responsible for a workshop which manufactures massive mono-crystals (especially piezoelectric) devices and also ensures that the know-how concerning high-performance quartz resonators fabrication is retained.
On scientific grounds, the activities of the departement associate electronics with acoustics in anisotropic and crystalline media.
