France’s first OSA Student Chapter kicks off

The first OSA student chapter in France was recently established at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, a picturesque and historical town near the Jura Mountains bordering Switzerland. Besançon has a long tradition in precision technologies, and is one of the microtechnology capitals of Europe. Photonics plays a central role in the University research landscape, and the Optics Department currently has around 30 PhD students in areas including ultrafast and nonlinear optics, telecommunications, nanotechnology, and biophotonics.

Driven by the motivation and enthusiasm of its members, the chapter will play a central role encouraging students to develop international linkages and to develop a broader perspective on their research. The Chapter's activities will include organizing various student events in the university and local schools, bringing together both students and experienced researchers to share their excitement and passion for optics and photonics.

The inaugural meeting was held on Monday 27 April, with a Seminar given by visiting OSA Fellow Professor Curtis Menyuk from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. After giving an extremely stimulating seminar on new techniques for short pulse generation, Professor Menyuk met with students during an extended laboratory tour and during a post-visit reception.
