Abstract :  Photonics is replacing electronics for a number of applications ranging from smart cities to the Internet of Things. There is a need for very specific architectures that are not easily accessible to clean room manufacturing. Major bottlenecks need to be overcome, such as the production of waveguides in non-standard electro-optical (EO) materials or polarization control with thin waveplates. My thesis proposes solutions to these challenges through two innovations, with the ultimate goal of opening towards hybrid 3D photonic integrated circuits. The first innovation is the development of generic machining technologies of substrate for the production of a new range of electro-photonic guides. We will be particularly interested in the cubic EO material BSO (Bismuth and Silicon Oxide) and lithium niobate (LN).
In particular, we will show the first EO waveguide modulators in BSO, realized from original fabrication techniques using the precision dicing saw. The second innovation is based on integrated polarization control techniques compatible with industrial fabrication, based on thin films to develop waveplates blades or ultra-thin polarizers based on metasurfaces. An industrial application is targeted for demonstration: low-invasive and temperature-independent detection of electric fields. Based on two complementary technologies: on BSO and on LN, we will show how to develop electro-optical sensors with low birefringence, thus ensuring a low temperature dependence.
