Ludovic BEBON : "Reversible solid hydrogen storage : Study and Modeling of the isolated particle of intermetallic compound during absorption"

Abstract : Hydrogen appears today as a virtuous energy vector in response to the current climate and energy challenges. Its use requires the development of a complete hydrogen sector with the production, use and storage of a decarbonized hydrogen.
This work is interested in the problems of the so-called 'solid' storage of hydrogen, in particular the phenomena of expansion and decay of intermetallic compound particles. The objective is to characterize and numerically approach the mechanical behavior of a particle of intermetallic compound when it absorbs hydrogen.This work first deals with the state of the art of the hydrogen industry, the description of the storage by intermetallics but also the inherent challenges.
Observations of three intermetallic compounds of interest, LaNi5, le TiFe0.9Mn0.1 et le TiMn1.5, are performed during their first reaction with hydrogen in a dedicated bench. Then a characterization of \TiFe{} is carried out by compression, ultrasound propagation and nanoindentation tests. A first analytical model of the hydrogen absorption by a two-phase sphere is proposed to explain the stabilization of the granularity of the material granularity in the storage tanks.
Finally, a hydrogen absorption modeling of a single particle is developed in the framework of the discrete element method. This model allows to assess the influence of mechanical properties on the behavior of the particle and its way of decrepitation.
