Solène STOENS : "On the key role of third bodies on the tribological behavior of Cu-Zr-based bulk metallic glasses"

Abstract : Bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are metallic alloys of complex chemical composition, obtained by a fast cooling process from the liquid state into an amorphous solid state. BMG have a great potential for several industrial applications, including micromechanics, thanks to their excellent mechanical properties, especially their high yield strength. The targeted applications therefore require tribological considerations, due to the significant impact of friction and wear at the micro-scale.
The tribological behavior of BMG, however, is still poorly understood. The partial and fragmented literature on the tribological behavior of BMG is controversial.
This thesis aims at providing a better understanding and an optimization of the tribological behavior of Cu-Zr-based BMG, in order to promote their use in applications involving contact actions. For this purpose, the approach focuses on the third body analysis, in order to provide a new understanding of the tribological behavior of BMG.
