Sudnya VAIDYA : "Embedded integrated monitoring of the state of charge and health of storage batteries"

Abstract : Soaring demand for Li-ion batteries in green mobility necessitates real-time, on-board health monitoring. This thesis addresses this gap by proposing a novel "Intelligent Gray Box Model" (IGBM). The IGBM combines non-invasive EEIS and multi-physical ECMs with machine learning to diagnose battery State of Charge (SOC) and State of Temperature (SOT) in real-time.
First, a critical review analyzes existing characterization techniques and embedded limitations. An experimental test bench is then developed for real-time data acquisition under operational and embedded constraints. Based on acquired data a fractional-order model captures battery dynamics, while the new hybrid optimization method efficiently identifies ECM parameters.
The IGBM leverages machine learning for sensorless SOT detection for individual cells in a pack and improved SOC estimation using the improved Cross-BiLSTM network. IGBM offers a significant boost in the performance of lightweight ML models by its unique dimension and noise reduction technique contrary to the traditional black box models.
The work highlights IGBM's successful implementation for real-time SOT detection on an industrial standard STM32 microcontroller, demonstrating the feasibility of running lightweight neural networks on resource-constrained embedded devices.
This paves the way for reliable, precise, and cost-effective embedded battery health monitoring and diagnosis solutions.
