Thomas SCHLINQUER : "Contribution to the topological optimization of piezoelectric structures"

Abstract : Nowadays, the development of micromechatronics systems requires the integration of a set of functionalities including actuation and measurement in a reduced volume. The design of such systems remains a delicate process due to their complexity and the coupling effects between the structure and its actuation and measurement mechanisms. Several solutions have been proposed in the literature in particular the optimal design methods. For example, they allow to optimize the actuator/sensor location within a supporting structure, simultaneous or separate optimization of actuator dimensions, design with guaranteed performance, design based passive and active blocks, etc. However, they optimize only the geometric parameters of the structure and its active mechanisms. This limits in advance the shape of the active mechanisms and consequently those of the resulting structures. To achieve high-performance micromechatronics systems with a high density integration, we propose in this thesis to develop a design tool based topology optimization. Therefore, the thesis aims to demonstrate the interest of this method for the design of piezoelectric structures. First, the physics of piezoelectric material was integrated into the SIMP topology optimization approach (Solid Isotropic with Material Penalization). Then, the extended approach was implemented under MATLAB. Finally, two structures, a 1D actuator and a 2D positioner, were designed using the developed tool and then fabricated. Numerical simulations and experimental validations have shown a good agreement between the optimized structures and the prototypes, thus demonstrating the interest and the potential of this optimization approach.
