The legacy of Fourier Optics: a Tribute to Pierre-Michel Duffieux

 Pierre-Michel Duffieux (1891-1976) was a pioneer of optical science, formulating the central concepts of Fourier optics that underpin the modern theory of image formation. He established optics as a major research theme at the Université Marie et Louis Pasteur, and the group that he built there later became the Optics Department of the Institut FEMTO-ST. Through his teaching and leadership, the Optics Department was ideally placed in the 1960s to embrace the invention of the laser, opening new themes in optical information processing, nonlinear optics, optoelectronics, and nanoscience. A particular highlight was the expertise developed in holography, which resulted in a collection of over 250 holographic plates that are currently the subject of a scientific heritage protection project. With 2026 marking the 50th anniversary of his death, this provides a timely and fitting motivation for a seminar in his honour.  This event is being supported by the Institute FEMTO-ST and the Institute of Technology of the University Marie and Louis Pasteur (UMLP).
