Hervé Maillotte

<p>Hervé Maillotte is a CNRS research director at FEMTO-ST Institute in Besançon, France. After completing his PhD at University of Franche-Comté (uFC) in 1990 on spatial coherent control of nonlinear optical instabilities and stimulated scattering, he has been recruited as a CNRS researcher in 1991. Since then, he has developed several themes in nonlinear optics and nonlinear (self)-guided photonics, such as various spatial soliton dynamics, nonlinear Z-scan metrology applied to organic materials, CW-to-ultrafast parametric amplification, frequency conversion and supercontinuum generation in optical fibres (he was awarded the Photon d'Or 2005 of OPTO Fair Paris for a compact "white light laser" source developed with a French company). More recently, he has led or carried out research on opto-acoustics and Brillouin interactions in photonic crystal fibres and micro-nanowires, with applications to distributed sensing, and on technological research on lithium niobate thin films and components, with applications to electroacoustic, photonic and nonlinear frequency conversion components. Author or co-author of more than 280 peer-reviewed papers and international conferences, two patents and one operating licence, he has directed or co-directed 21 PhD theses and has been coordinating about 30 academic or industrial research contracts, and national or international cooperation programs. He is currently coordinating the French CNRS participation to the H2020 ACTPHAST and the subsequent PhotonHub Europe projects, aimed at accelerating the uptake of photonics innovation by researchers and SMEs at the European scale.</p><p>Head of the Nonlinear Optics group from 1997 to 2005, he was the director of the Optics Department of FEMTO-ST and a Management Board member of the Institute from 2006 to 2016. At the local level, he was an elected or appointed member of several councils (uFC Scientific Council, Collegium of the Master's Degree of engineering… and, from 2016 to 2020, Academic Council of the University Bourgogne-Franche-Comté - UBFC). He is also strongly involved in the regional dynamics in innovation and technology transfer, notably by contributing to the creation in 2013 of the private foundation FC'Innov and its technological development centre FEMTO Engineering, of which he has been vice-president since its inception. He has also contributed to numerous actions to disseminate science with and for society, for example within the framework of the International Year of Light 2015.</p><p>Hervé Maillotte has actively contributed to the conception and running of the Labex ACTION, a laboratory of excellence gathering three research units (FEMTO-ST, ICB, LNIO) on smart systems embedded into matter, selected in 2011 by the Investments for the Future Program (PIA) of the French government. He has been leading the working group "nonlinear functionalities" and the "information processing" axis, and then has been the head of the Labex in 2017-2018. He has then contributed to the set-up of the interdisciplinary Graduate School EIPHI, a PIA3 "Ecole Universitaire de Recherche" follow-up project that now gathers 7 research units, 2 doctoral schools, 17 Master degrees, &gt; 1500 members, PhD and master students. He has been a co-leader of EIPHI research committee from 2018 to 2020 and is now the director of the Graduate School. He is also actively involved in several other PIA3 related projects (Equipex+ SMARTLIGHT, SFRI UBFC-InteGrate) and bodies within UBFC that also contribute to the global structuration of the academic research-training-innovation triptych in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region according to high international standards.</p><p>At national and international levels, he has also served on various scientific and organization conference committees, scientific networks (GdR CNRS, European COST) and carried out numerous expert assessments and evaluation activities (ANR, HCERES, ERC, international bodies ...), notably chairing a FNRS evaluation committee in Belgium from 2016 to 2019. He is also an appointed member of councils or committees in diverse French laboratories and universities and for several external PIA projects. In addition, he has been regularly involved in editorial duties in several international journals (currently Associate Editor, and regularly Outstanding Editor, of&nbsp;"Light: Science &amp; Applications" – Springer Nature, since 2011).</p>
