Achraf EL MOHAJIR : "Development of a silicon micro-device dedicated to the selective detection of BTEX in indoor air: contribution of the “GLAD” technique for the elaboration of nano-structured SnO2 sensitive layers"

Abstract : The quality of indoor air is a major health concern and may be even more important than the quality of outdoor air due to the long exposure times. Among the various pollutants found in indoor air (confined environment), BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) are considered today as priority substances.
The aim of this project is to develop a prototype of a micro gas chromatograph for the rapid detection of BTEX traces in confined spaces. The proposed microsystem is composed of three distinct analytical units: a micro-preconcentrator, a micro-chromatographic column and a chemical micro-sensor.
This research work was divided into two main sections. The first part was centered around the characterization of porous materials for the preconcentration and identification of BTEX in indoor air. The preconcentration step will allow the sensor to detect the target pollutants at trace level. The second part of this project focused on the elaboration of SnO2 nanostructured thin films and their localized deposition on micro-hotplates. Using the original "GLAD" (GLancing Angle Deposition) technique to control the architecture, nanostructured sensitive layers were synthetized with enhanced performances.
