Nicolas CHARPENTIER : "Characterization and modelling of the PIM-like Material Extrusion of bio-sourced components"

Abstract :  Development of the Material Extrusion (MEX) process using bio-based PLA and a steel powder.

MEX is an additive manufacturing process allowing to build a part by depositing seams of molten material next to each other, to obtain a layer, and then to superimpose the layers. The part retains its shape as the seams solidify. The PIM-like MEX correspond to the extrusion of a plastic-powder mixture. The part created is brittle and has the properties of the mixture. To produce a dense part with the desired geometry, the extruded mixture undergoes two successive treatments: the elimination of the plastic creating a porous material that is difficult to handle and the densification of this material via a thermal treatment progressively eliminating the porosity. This work includes an understanding and an optimization of the parameters of the different steps of the process from the powder to the solid material
