Adán Cabello, Professor of physics at the University of Seville, Spain will introduce a seminar about non-locality and Kochen-Specker sets, on Tuesday, September 30, in the amphi Gagnepain, TEMIS.

Title : "The unexpected renaissance of Kochen-Specker sets"

Abstract : For decades, Kochen-Specker (KS) sets were renowned for their role in proving the impossibility of non-contextual hidden variable theories. This perspective changed in 2012 when state-independent contextuality was demonstrated without KS sets. Interestingly, the role of KS sets has undergone a profound revision in the last two years. We have recently proven their crucial purpose: they are necessary for maximal Bell nonlocality in bipartite systems—a result that holds for all four definitions of maximality. This establishes maximal nonlocality, a powerful resource proven to be central to (non-oracular) quantum computational advantage and to some crucial results in foundations of physics, as a direct consequence of the existence of KS sets. This talk will explore this paradigm shift and present some recent results motivated by the new, fundamental role of KS sets.
