Victor ALMANZA : "Development of a physics-based decision-making support approach for the conservation and preservation of heritage musical instruments in playable condition"

Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the capacity of numerical simulations to predict the static and dynamic behavior of heritage musical instruments in order to enhance decision support for their conservation and maintenance under playing conditions. The first part of this work focuses on the impact of the mechanical state induced during the construction and assembly of a wooden soundboard on its modal behavior in low frequencies through two studies. The first study examines the impact of different standard bracing methods on the behavior of simplified soundboards and has shown that this impact differs from one bracing technique to another. The second study examines the impact of the assembly method of an archlute soundboard. Numerical and experimental results showed consistent trends, namely, a greater impact of the gluing process than of the assembly steps, thus demonstrating the ability of an unvalidated model to predict useful trends in a museum context. The second part of this work focuses on the impact of string tension on the low frequency modal behavior of an archlute soundboard. Numerical and experimental results again show similar trends, namely, that the impact of string tension does not drastically alter the modal behavior of the soundboard. These results demonstrate the ability of an unvalidated model to predict useful trends for decision support in a museum context. The last part of this work illustrates the proposed physics-based decision support approach via two studies performed on a simplified model of a lute. These two applications illustrate the potential of the methodology but also its limits by demonstrating the strong impact of the uncertainty model on the results.
