Un micron d’or pour la micro horloge atomique de FEMTO-ST

Dans le cadre du projet européen MAC-TFC qui a regroupé 10 partenaires européens académiques et industriels, FEMTO-ST a développé une technologie originale de microcellule à vapeur de césium, constituant le cœur de micro-horloges atomiques de nouvelle génération.

Ce type d’horloge atomique miniature combine en effet un faible volume (proche de celui d’un dé à coudre), une puissance de consommation réduite (de l’ordre de 150 mW) et une dérive inférieure à 1 microseconde (0.000 001s) par jour, soit des performances de 2 à 3 ordres de grandeur meilleures que les oscillateurs à quartz utilisés massivement aujourd’hui.

Utilisées pour la mesure précise du temps, ces horloges performantes sont par exemple requises pour la synchronisation des réseaux de télécommunications travaillant à des débits toujours croissants, les systèmes de navigation type GPS et les systèmes radars.
