DMA : Internship "Programmable matter for adaptive structural mechanics"
Context : This internship is part of a research project led by the FEMTO-ST Institute (Besançon-FR) aimed at developing intelligent structures with spatial reorganization capabilities (see for example https://youtu.be/IZh-
5p1dbKk). The mechanical properties of the arranged structures depend on the spatial organization of the elementary blocks that make them up. During reconfiguration, moving one of the elementary blocks must ensure the desired evolution towards the target configuration, while guaranteeing the integrity of the structure. For example, the structure must not topple over, nor evolve into a configuration where local constraints make it impossible to guarantee contact between two elementary blocks. The project is led by the DISC department (Département Informatique des Systèmes Complexes), and involves the DMA (Département Mécanique Appliquée). This is where the internship will take place. The work to be carried out will involve the mechanical modeling and simulation of assembled structures, and will have several objectives:
- Definition of the macroscopic geometries required to achieve a given mechanical behavior (e.g., a target stiffness, a particular dynamic behavior, ...)
- Creation of mechanical models connecting the elementary cells, and assembly of the overall problem to enable it to be solved.
- Definition of algorithms for solving the mechanical problem, enabling the calculation to be distributed between different cells
- Experimental validation on DISC department cells
Localization : Département Mécanique Appliquée - 24, Chemin de l'Epitaphe - 25000 Besançon. This work will be carried out within the DMA, in interaction with the DISC PhD student working on this subject.
The internship will last 5 to 6 months, starting in February 2025.
