CNRS "Proof by Image" competition

Discover the selection of the 20 images selected by the CNRS, one of which is presented by FEMTO-ST, and vote for the "audience award" photo.

Launched in 2010 in Quebec by the French speaking association for knowledge (Acfas), the "Proof by Image" competition focuses on science actors (researchers, PhD students, post-PhD...) and invites them to highlight the graphic beauty of research. Since 2019, the CNRS organizes the French version of the competition, open to its staff. Among the images submitted at the beginning of 2020 for this second edition, about twenty images were selected by the jury, composed of representatives of the CNRS Communication Department, Acfas, institutions dedicated to scientific culture and scientific photographers and journalists.

In this selection is the photo "Mad Soap and the Laser Fairy", presented by researchers from the optics department of FEMTO-ST: Rémi Meyer, Thomas Daugey, Luc Froehly and the photographer in residence Sarah Ritter. This image shows the propagation of a multicolor laser (supercontinuum) in a soap membrane: the light remains confined within the thickness of the bubble, whose minute variations in thickness guide each color differently. The result is a colorful, cosmic-looking bouquet.

Beyond the artistic aspect, this image illustrates the ongoing research on the propagation of light in complex systems. This theme is at the heart of ongoing revolutions in fields such as medical imaging or optical communication networks.

Beside  the Jury's best award  and the Jury's "Coup de Coeur", the public is invited from October 1 to 31 to vote for the "audience award" photo.
