Daniel BRUNNER winner of an ERC Consolidator grant 2021

Daniel BRUNNER is a CNRS researcher at the FEMTO-ST Institute and has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council Cosolidator Grant of 2M € for his INSPIRE project

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the list of 313 winning researchers of its "ERC Consolidator Grants 2021".

These grants, worth up to 2 million euros, are awarded for a period of 5 years. They support exploratory research in three main areas - humanities and social sciences, physics and engineering, and life sciences, with the sole criterion of project excellence, with a selection rate of 12%.

Among the 29 projects awarded in France, 10 are hosted by CNRS, including the project of Daniel Brunner, researcher at FEMTO-ST. The central concept of the INSPIRE project is to develop three-dimensional photonic circuits, coupled to active media, in order to realize integrated three-dimensional neural networks, like in the brain but communicating with optical rather than electrical signals. The neuromorphic processors that will be developed will bring significant gains in speed and energy efficiency compared to the current architectures used by artificial intelligence.
