Pink October: A smart bra project
Zeina Al Masry talks to France 3 TV about her innovative connected bra project for the early detection of breast cancer.
A researcher at the FEMTO-ST institute and lecturer at SUPMICROTECH-ENSMM, Zeina Al Masry is working on the development of an intelligent device equipped with thermal sensors linked to artificial intelligence algorithms, the aim of which is to detect anomalies in breast tissue, particularly of cancerous origin, by measuring thermography through skin contact.
The aim of the Bra Connect project is to facilitate access to screening at a time when access to mammography is becoming longer, to encourage more women to undergo screening by means of an intermediate examination before mammography, and to extend screening to younger women with less frequent but more aggressive cancers.
The device is worn for 30 minutes. The data from the thermal sensors is analysed using artificial intelligence methods. The analysis is based on a model that takes into account the uncertainty of the measurements, enabling the location of the anomaly to be determined.
Clinical trials have been underway since 2022 in two hospitals: Hôpital Nord de Franche-Comté in Belfort and ICANS in Strasbourg. Some forty patients have been included to date. The results are already satisfactory and will be officially unveiled once they have been completed.
At the same time, a technology transfer phase is being studied with industrial companies capable, in time, of marketing a marketable product based on this current laboratory prototype.
