When the light is directed by its magnetic field

FEMTO-ST researchers have discovered a new optical magnetic interaction to direct light fluxes. These works are published in the journal Light: Science and Applications

Despite the link between the electric and magnetic waves coexisting in the light, its magnetic part is often considered as a rare and nega- tive contributor to the interaction between light and matter. With the advent of nano-optics and metamaterials that allow studies at dimensions smaller than the wavelengths of the visible spectrum, this hidden face of light reveals completely new optical properties. FEMTO-ST researchers have thus revealed a new manifestation directing light flows on a very small scale thanks to their optical magnetic field.
