Michel DEVEL (born in 1967) obtained a PhD in Physics from the University of Paris-XI (Orsay) in 1992, after succeeding at the “agrégation de physique” in 1989, during his four year stay at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan. In 1993, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon’s molecular physics lab, which merged in the UTINAM institute in 2007. Since November 1st 2008, he is Professor at the engineering graduate school SUPMICROTECH-ENSMM – “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques” in Besançon.
His research evolved from quantum chromodynamics during his PHD, to theoretical studies concerning various local probe microscopies, the material origin of 1/f noise un quartz ultra-stable oscillators, and physics of carbonaceous nanostructures (fullerenes, carbon onions, nanotubes, dust nanograins), using Green’s functions techniques and molecular dynamics. He is now interested in the development of multi-scale, multi-physics algorithms (atomistic to continuum coupling) in order to help designing new materials and surface nanostructures for their characterization and possibly inclusion in NanoElectroMechanical Systems (possibly using flexoelectric effects).
