Two Best Paper awards at Photonics West
Mathilde Hary and Maxime Romanet win two of the 5 awards for best oral presentations at the world's leading optics-photonics conference
Every year, Photonics West, held in San Francisco (California), is the must-attend event for the optics-photonics industry, with 20,000 participants from all over the world.
In parallel, an exceptional conference program with world-renowned symposia dedicated to medical optics, imaging, lasers, micro-nano interfaces, optoelectronics and green photonics technology is offered.
In 2024, it took place from January 27 to February 1, and featured some 4666 oral presentations, 5 of which were awarded the best paper prize.
Mathilde Hary, a PhD student in FEMTO-ST's Optics department, in cotutelle with the University of Tampere (Finland), received the OPTO AI Best Paper award, for the best submission in the field of artificial intelligence in photonics. Mathilde's award-winning work is based on the use of autoencoders applied to compressive sampling in a high-dimensional ultrafast optical system.

Maxime Romanet, also a PhD student in FEMTO-ST's Optics department, was awarded the OPTO Sustainability Best Paper prize for work that highlights the use of optics and photonics for sustainable development. Maxime is working on the demonstration of a distributed temperature measurement along an optical fiber, with a range beyond 120 km without amplification modules, enabling the monitoring of undersea power cables linking offshore wind farms to the continents.
