RÉESPIRATION Project: When art breathes to the rhythm of science and medicine
An interactive work of art born of an unprecedented dialogue between artists, carers and researchers to raise awareness of breathing and its calming power
At the crossroads of art, medicine and technology, RÉESPIRATION is an immersive work of art conceived by artist Samuel Bianchini, on the initiative of carers from the Pitié-Salpêtrière Pneumology and Respiratory Intensive Care Department, with the support of the French Ministry of Culture and the Fondation de France.
This artistic and scientific device draws on advances in flexible robotics, respiratory physiology and sensory intelligence to offer a unique experience: an object that breathes with you, in real time, thanks to a thermal and lidar detection system. Its embroidered surface, light and sound enhance immersion and create a truly soothing space.
The FEMTO-ST laboratory played a central role in the technical design of the work, developing the flexible robot, the pneumatic actuation system and its control, and integrating all the technologies that enable the work to interact with the spectator's breath.
RÉESPIRATION raises awareness of the importance of breathing, of its regulating power on body and mind, but also of the often invisible reality of respiratory illnesses and the suffering they engender. Already being studied in a hospital setting with patients, the work will also be presented in contemporary art venues to reach a wider audience.
